Flavour gets the marketing budget, but strength is the spec that actually decides whether you enjoy a pouch or tap out ten minutes in. Pick too light and you'll wonder what the fuss is about; pick too heavy and the first session can be genuinely unpleasant. This guide explains what the number on the can means, how our four strength tiers compare, and how to choose a first can — then move up or down with some method to it.
What the mg number actually means
On most cans the number is milligrams of nicotine per individual pouch — not per can. A 6mg can holds roughly twenty pouches, each carrying 6mg. The release is gradual: a pouch gives up its nicotine over the course of a session rather than all at once, which is why the same 6mg can read very differently depending on how long you keep it in.
One caution for label readers: some brands state strength per gram of pouch material instead, written as mg/g. A per-gram figure reads far higher than the nicotine in a single pouch, so it can't be compared directly with a per-pouch one. Several brands on our shelf use per-gram labels — FEDRS, for one — and where a product name says mg/g, that's what it means. When a number looks surprisingly big, check the can before you compare.
The four tiers, from mild to extra strong
Mild (2–3mg) — the on-ramp. Slow-building, easy to gauge, easy to put down. Our mild shelf is the smallest on the site, led by Velo's minis such as Velo Crispy Peppermint Mini 3mg, and it's the right place for adults new to nicotine pouches to start.
Regular (4–6mg) — the everyday middle. It registers clearly within a few minutes and stays manageable across a workday. Velo Freezing Peppermint 6mg is a textbook example, and the regular tier holds Zyn's 4mg and 6mg cans too.
Strong (7–9mg) — quicker onset, more presence, one pouch carries further. The strong tier suits experienced adult users who find 6mg fading too fast; on our shelf that means 8mg and 9mg cans, from Velo's Max range to Zyn Violet Licorice 8mg.
Extra strong (10mg+) — the deep end, starting at 12mg on our shelf and running well past 20mg. White Fox Full Charge 20mg is a typical heavyweight. Strictly for experienced adult users — never a starting point. Because many European brands build strong-first, this is also our biggest tier: the extra-strong shelf carries more cans than any other.
Why the same mg can feel different
Four variables change how a given strength reads:
- Format. Mini pouches run smaller and drier, slims sit in between, regular pouches carry the most material. The same 6mg lands more gently from a mini than from a full-size pouch.
- Session length. Twenty minutes and forty-five minutes are different experiences with the identical pouch.
- Your own tolerance. Regular users of other nicotine formats read strengths differently than first-timers do — there is no universal scale.
- Flavour masking. Heavy cooling can make a strong pouch feel deceptively casual. A 12mg deep-freeze mint and a 12mg berry are the same strength; they will not feel like it.
Choosing your first strength
The honest rule: start lower than your ego suggests. Adults completely new to nicotine should start in the mild tier and treat the first can as a calibration exercise. Adults who already use other nicotine products usually land comfortably in the regular 4–6mg tier. Nobody — genuinely nobody — should start in the extra-strong tier, no matter how confident they feel walking in.
Two habits worth building from day one: use one pouch at a time (stacking is how strong cans ambush people), and judge a strength across a full can rather than a single session.
Moving between tiers
The signals for moving up are consistent: sessions fade faster than they used to, or you reach for a second pouch right after the first. Move one tier at a time — 6mg to 9mg is a noticeable step, 6mg to 15mg is a wall. Moving down is just as common and just as valid: plenty of strong-tier users keep a can of minis around for meetings and evenings.
The catalogue is built to let you hold a flavour and change only the number — Zyn's Cool Mint alone runs from a 4mg mini through 12mg to 15mg, so a tier change never has to mean a taste change.
What about the very top of the ladder?
Past 20mg the numbers climb fast: 25mg cans are common in the extra-strong tier, and several brands print 50mg on the can. Two cautions apply up there. Some of those big numbers are per-gram labels, not per-pouch doses, so read the can. And they are outliers, not goals: extreme strengths exist for a small group of experienced adult users, and even within that group they deserve respect. If you're curious what lives at the top, the extra-strong shelf holds the whole tier; climb to it, don't start at it.
